Witch Hazel FAQs

Yes – they both are!

Our harvesting methods do not impact the well-being of any humans, animals, or other ecosystems on the lands. Due to our sustainable harvesting methods and our responsible acquisition of our ingredients, we ensure that we do not deplete the forests in any way and that each plant will completely renew itself within the next 5 to 7 years.

Additionally, heat generated from our process is recycled to heat our manufacturing building, and any waste material generated is sold as lawn mulch to local garden stores.

It’s important to us that we only use the highest quality ingredients in our products. And since USP guidelines require witch hazel to be distilled in order to produce the purest, safest and most effective form, that’s what we do and what we use.
No, we use a proprietary distillation process using high purity steam to extract the purest, most efficacious compounds from the twigs and bark of mature witch hazel plants – producing a pure aqueous distillate.

Our pure, natural witch hazel distillate contains organic compounds that will spoil if not preserved. After producing our witch hazel distillate, it is combined in-line with pure grain alcohol as a gentle, natural preservative at the lowest level possible. This is how we create our exclusive, 100% natural non-drying formula that has been loved by generations of Americans.

Your nose knows! An easy way to tell if your product contains genuine witch hazel is to give it a sniff!

Genuine witch hazel has a distinct botanical scent that is its signature. Even in fragranced products, often you can smell its characteristic undertones.

Also, you can check the ingredients statement on the back label to see if witch hazel is at the top or bottom of the list. Cosmetic products are required to list ingredients in descending order of concentration. If water is listed first – it’s not powered by genuine witch hazel!

To ensure you are buying an authentic Dickinson’s product on Amazon, only purchase Dickinson’s branded items that are designated as “Ships from Amazon.com and Sold by Amazon.com.” This designation is listed under the item’s “Add to Cart” button. Products sold by distributors or third parties are not necessarily authorized.

Facial Cleansers

The Pore Perfecting and Hydrating Facial Cleansers are a perfect step before toning. They will actively cleanse, protect & prepare the skin for the fine-tuning effects of toning with Dickinson’s Pore Perfecting Toner or Dickinson’s Hydrating Toner with Rose Water.

Yes. After working the cleansers into wet hands to create a light lather, wash your face & rinse thoroughly. Follow up with Dickinson’s Pore Perfecting Toner or Dickinson’s Hydrating Toner with Rosewater for maximum hydrating & toning results.

Yes. Dickinson’s Pore Perfecting Foaming Cleanser will gently wash away dirt, oil & makeup without disrupting the skin’s protective barrier. For maximum results, we recommend Dickinson’s Micellar Cleansing Witch Hazel as the first step in your skin care cleansing regime. After cleansing, follow up with Dickinson’s Pore Perfecting Toner as the last step to remove any remaining traces of makeup.

Yes. Both Dickinson’s Pore Perfecting Foaming Cleanser and Hydrating Cleanser can be safely incorporated into a morning & night skin care routine without risk of negative side effects. In fact, our entire witch hazel brand product line is gentle enough to use every day, even on sensitive skin.

While cleansers are not a treatment for acne, they are powered by our trusted witch hazel formula, which refines pores & helps remove blemish-causing dirt and oil.

Dickinson’s Pore Perfecting Cleanser does not contain heavy-foaming ingredients, like sodium lauryl sulfates, which irritate the skin. Our cleansing formula’s foaming ingredients are gentle to prevent skin irritation. Applying a small amount to wet hands will create a soft, light lather.

Ceramides are known for helping to reduce free radicals that target & destroy elastin and collagen and protect against hyperpigmentation & age spots. The ceramides in our Pore Perfecting Foaming Cleanser replenish the skin without disrupting the skin’s protective barrier while the ceramides in our Hydrating Gel Cleanser replenish the skin to help restore the skin’s protective barrier.
While Dickinson’s Pore Perfecting Foaming Cleanser and Hydrating Gel Cleanser are intended for use on the face, they can also be used safely on the surface of the skin on the whole body. They are not intended for use as a shampoo, intimate areas, on babies, children or pets.
